At Awakaan Bimaaji Animal Shelter, our mission extends far beyond providing temporary shelter for animals in need. Our Board of Directors remains deeply committed to creating a compassionate, sustainable, and culturally grounded organization that protects the wellbeing of animals while honoring the traditional teachings and way of life of the Anishinaabe people.

Every decision made by our leadership is guided by the belief that animals are not disposable or forgotten beings, but living spirits deserving of respect, dignity, and care. Through strong governance, ethical practices, and community collaboration, our Board works to ensure that Awakaan Bimaaji Animal Shelter continues to grow as a safe and healing place for vulnerable animals while also serving the people connected to them.

The Anishinaabe teachings remind us of our responsibility to live in balance with all living things. These teachings shape the heart of our organization and influence how we care for animals, support our community, and approach rescue work. We believe that kindness, humility, honesty, bravery, wisdom, truth, and respect are not simply values to speak about, but responsibilities to live every day. By incorporating these traditional teachings into our operations, we strive to create an environment rooted in compassion, healing, and cultural identity.

Our Board of Directors is dedicated to advancing animal welfare through responsible shelter practices, rescue partnerships, education, and long-term planning. This includes improving standards of care, supporting veterinary partnerships, strengthening foster and adoption programs, and developing sustainable resources that allow our organization to continue serving animals for years to come. We recognize that meaningful rescue work requires both immediate action and long-term vision.

As we move forward, we remain committed to honoring both animal welfare and cultural teachings together. By blending modern rescue efforts with traditional Anishinaabe ways of knowing and caring for living beings, Awakaan Bimaaji Animal Shelter hopes to create lasting change for animals and communities alike.

Every life matters. Every act of kindness matters. And every step forward strengthens the path toward healing, respect, and hope for the animals who depend on us.
